Should Russian actions in the Ukraine be considered as a movie, such as “The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming,” or as in the Stephen Sondheim song, “Send in the Clowns.”
In the Cold War story a harmless
Russian submarine crew’s commander wants to see New England. The commander gets
too close and his sub runs aground.
The antics that follow are
all evocative of how extreme views were during that period.
Or, when looking at the
Ukraine, should we be singing “Send in the Clowns,” which includes the lyrics, “Don’t
bother they’re already here.”
The four-star general who
commands NATO, Air Force General Phillip Breedlove, says the Russians aren’t
fooling anybody, according to the Army Times.
Breedlove, in his NATO blog,
said Russian President Vladimir Putin is lying when he says his troops are not
involved in unrest in eastern Ukraine.
“What is happening in eastern Ukraine is a
military operation that is well planned and organized, and we assess that it is
being carried out at the direction of Russia,” the general wrote on NATO’s
blog.
He said the Russian separatists
involved in the disturbances are too well armed and too disciplined to be
merely civilians.
Putin, speaking in a
question-and-answer session on Russian TV, said he has the historical right to
send in military forces but hasn’t. He said claims that he has are “nonsense,”
Ria Novosti reported.
This same former KGB agent
earlier denied Russian troops had occupied Crimea before it voted to secede from
Ukraine. Later he took credit for what the soldiers had done.
Now, Russia, the US, European
Union and Ukraine, claim an agreement has been reached in Geneva that will end
all the violence.
Actually, there have only been a
handful of deaths, though some writers claim it is close to being a civil war.
In the Syrian civil war, in which
Putin supports the regime, it is estimated more than 150,000 people have died.
There are so many false flag
operations and canards that the only thing that has been confirmed is that
nothing is confirmed.
Is the peace deal real or a
mirage?
