Blacks massacred in Civil War church

Alleged killer Dylann Roof

At least nine people were killed by a young white man in the oldest black African Methodist Episcopal church in the South.
The dead included the pastor.
The Post Courier said they were shot inside the oldest African American Methodist Episcopal Church in the South. One arrest was reported but apparently the individual was later released.
No information was immediately released on the weapon or weapons used.  Police searched overnight for the killer, identified as 21-year-old Dylann Roof.
The Southern Poverty Law Center says there are at least 784 active hate groups.
Mayor Joe Riley said: “We’re still gathering information so it’s not the time yet for details,” he said. “I will say that this is an unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy in this most historic church, an evil and hateful person took the lives of citizens who had come to worship and pray together.”
Riley promised to “bring this awful person to justice as soon as humanely possible”.
Gov. Nikki Haley told the media her family was praying “for the victims and families touched by tonight’s senseless tragedy.”
Police Chief Gregory Mullen told Reuters the shooting occurred Wednesday night.
Mullen said: “It is unfathomable that somebody in today’s society would walk into a church when people are having a prayer meeting and take their lives."
Riley told the Atlanta Journal Constitution: "It is the most dastardly act that one could possibly imagine, and we will bring that person to justice. ... This is one hateful person."
